Когда я в 1969 году впервые опубликовал свою книгу «Измененные состояния сознания», трудно было найти достоверную и научно ориентированную информацию об этих радикальных, удивительных и принципиально важных способах изменения способа функционирования нашего ума. Я надеялся, что моя книга, будучи основным источником информации об измененных состояниях сознания, станет моим вкладом в дело признания темы измененных состояний как предмета научной психологии. С тех пор произошло очень значительное развитие исследований сознания, но прогресс не столь велик, как я надеялся. Я думал, что моя книга устареет уже лет через десять, но ее все так же продолжают цитировать в исследованиях, связанных с этой областью. Хотя мы сейчас знаем много нового, остается немало нерешенных вопросов.

Обширную библиографию литературы, опубликованной в прежние годы и связанной с измененными состояниями сознания, трансличной психологией и другими близкими темами, можно найти в книге «Измененные состояния сознания», но эта библиография, естественно, доходит лишь до конца шестидесятых годов. Мне приятно признавать, что сейчас эта область настолько широка, что подготовка действительно всеобъемлющей библиографии заняла бы гораздо большее время, чем то, что у меня есть.
